The war everyone insists is already priced

Good morning and welcome to today's market chronicle. It's Wednesday, July 22, 2026. Brent is trading with a war premium, and le tout-Wall Street has decided the war is a rounding error.

Yesterday the machines threw a party. The S&P 500 closed at 7,509, up a tidy 0.89 percent, the Nasdaq tacked on 1.29 percent, and the whole thing ran on the usual fuel, semiconductors and the eternal promise that Nvidia ($NVDA) will sell a chip to everyone with a pulse. Who actually won? The people already long, congratulating themselves for foresight that looks a lot like inertia. Then overnight the mood curdled, because it is hard to keep dancing when Brent crude sits above 92 dollars, its highest in nearly six weeks, propelled by another night of American strikes and a Strait of Hormuz that ships are now politely declining to enter. The leader of the free world has ruled out talks and promised more of the same, which in market-speak means buy oil, sell calm.

And yet. Futures this morning are down all of 0.3 percent on the S&P, 0.7 on the Nasdaq, a shrug dressed up as caution. Everyone is pretending not to notice that there is an actual shooting war around the world's most important oil chokepoint, because the collective wager is TACO, that Uncle Donald always chickens out before the tanker actually burns. Maybe he does. But the 10-year yield just climbed to 4.63 percent, its highest since mid-May, the bond market quietly translating "oil at 92" into "inflation is back, and the Fed is not coming to save you." The canary is not singing. The canary is looking at its watch.

What's ahead. After the bell we get Alphabet ($GOOGL) and Tesla ($TSLA), the two reports that decide whether the AI faith survives contact with reality for another quarter. Expect the usual liturgy about cloud growth and robotaxis forever eighteen months away. There is data too, but nobody will care until 4:01 p.m., when a single Tesla delivery footnote moves more money than the entire economic calendar.

The levels, cleanly. Gold near 4,060 dollars, still the only asset that sleeps at night. Brent above 92, the skunk at this particular garden party. Bitcoin loitering in the mid 60,000s, around 66,000, doing its impression of a safe haven nobody actually treats as one. S&P futures soft, the 10-year at 4.63 and climbing.

So we open lower, into a war everyone insists is priced, ahead of earnings everyone insists are guaranteed. The wonderful world of finance, pretending the emperor is dressed while the tailor sends invoices in crude.

Have a good one, and stay sharp.
